She lives in a lake outside of Gold Crown Town, spending her days in a normal duck fashion. Until one day she sees the ballet student Mytho by the lake. Ahiru is immediately in love, and wishes that she could dance with Mytho someday. The dead storyteller Drosselmeyer, whose stories still haunt Gold Crown Town, picks up on her plea and gives her a magical pendant that transforms Ahiru the duck into Ahiru the girl.

As a girl, Ahiru studies ballet at the same school as Mytho. She dreams of the day that she will get to dance with him in the advanced class, but as a duck-turned-girl, her ballet skills are lacking. When Mytho falls out of a window in an attempt to save a baby bird, Ahiru immediately transforms into Princess Tutu, a mythical storybook character whose sole job is to protect and return Prince Siegfried's heart shards. This was another part of Drosselmeyer's magical pendant, one part that Ahiru did not know of. Mytho, as Ahiru learns, is actually the prince from the story, whose heart is shattered because of a fight with The Raven. To save Gold Crown Town, Mytho had pierced and shattered his own heart. The Mytho that Ahiru knew was only a heartless being- he could not feel anything. Ahiru wishes to return the Prince's heart shards, at first because she wishes to live happily ever after with Mytho, and eventually because she only wants to see him smile. His smile is instant gratification to her- Ahiru would rather see Mytho smile than anything else in the world.

The catch for Ahiru is this: Princess Tutu in the story immediately disappears when she tells the prince of her love for him. She is not meant to marry the prince at all- in fact, her part in the story is rather short. Princess Tutu cannot fight, as well. Instead, she dances with those whose hearts are hurt or aching in some way, relieving them of their pain and rescuing heart shards. While Tutu is an impressive ballerina, her dancing cannot stand up to most evil doers if they mean harm to one person or another. Ahiru cannot even tell Mytho of her love while she is her normal self- that would cause her to disappear, as well. So Ahiru watches Mytho from afar, wishing that she could be as important in his life as Rue is.

As Mytho's heart shards are returned, his girlfriend Rue is jealous of all the attention that he gives to Princess Tutu. Thinking to stop any more heart shards from being returned, she transforms into Princess Kraehe, an "evil" princess who is so ugly that supposedly no one will love her. As Kraehe and Tutu fight the battle to return the Prince's heart, they are joined by Fakir, another ballet student who plays the role of the Knight in the story. Unlike the Knight, however, Fakir resists being torn apart like the story says, which allows all of the other "characters" to move on outside of the restrictions of the story as well. Princess Tutu refuses to reveal her love for the prince, which brings pulls her out of the traditional story line. Even Ahiru the girl refuses to submit to her storyline- she tells Rue that they are still friends, no matter who her father is. Rue doesn't believe her, since Ahiru is also Tutu, Kraehe's enemy. But Ahiru stands true to her word, always greeting Rue with a smile and a wave.

Finally, the story has gotten so far out of hand that Drosselmeyer, its creator, can do nothing to stop its progress. Fakir has turned out to be a descendant of the grand storyteller, and has also gained Drosselmeyer's power of bringing stories to life. With Fakir's new power, he is able to tell the story of the Prince and the Raven the way he wishes to, without Drosselmeyer's interruption. The only thing Drosselmeyer can do to try and prevent Fakir's story from happening is to pull Princess Tutu from the story completely. He says to Tutu that this was done in an attempt to right the wrong caused by her refusal to admit her love. This separates Ahiru from all of her friends, and is where I will be taking her from her canon. She comes from right when she gets sucked into the clockwork puppet world.

PERSONALITY: Ahiru can immediately be seen as a happy-go-lucky, caring girl. She is quick to make friends with most anyone, including those people that can be rather rude to her. She can't hold a grudge- immediately she is willing to forgive and forget. Ahiru can also be very clumsy, typically tripping and falling when she is nervous or embarassed. She speaks loudly and quickly, trying to get everything in before someone tells her to be quiet. She can find the good in most anyone, even people who at first seem rough and mean, like Fakir. Her love is unconditional: she loves because she wants to make people happy, and gives so much of herself that sometimes she wonders if she's hindering herself in the process.

Ahiru is very friendly to birds, being one herself, and feeds them everyday. She talks to them as though they understood human speech. If she accidentally quacks while wearing her magical pendant, or if she takes the pendant off, she turns back into a duck. Only water can change her back again, if she is wearing the pendant. Unfortunately, when she turns back into a girl she has no clothes on, which she finds rather embarassing. Despite being a late learner, Ahiru loves to dance, and often dreams of dancing as well as Princess Tutu, who is an accomplished ballerina. She dreams of the day that she gets her pointe shoes, just like every other girl in her class. But since she has been a duck for most of her life, she is horrible at lying. Her lies are practically transparent, just like her emotions. Everyone knows what she is thinking when she thinks it.

Princess Tutu, on the other hand, is calm and collected. She empathizes with people like Ahiru, but is able to contain her emotions and body so that what comes out is a dance and not random flailing. Princess Tutu can see through people's tangled emotions to find the problems that make them unhappy. Sadly, she is still bound by the story to never reveal her love for Mytho. Even as Ahiru, she can never tell Mytho that she loves him, or even suggest it vaguely.
